Edbuntu
I have just started working with a variant of the recent edition of the Ubuntu Linux Desktop called Edbuntu.
There are a lot of neat educational programs written that are used on this desktop. They cover topics from science to language arts, foreign language, math, computer programming and art. All of the programs are open source (meaning that the code used to create the program is available and can be modified to do what you want, if you are able to) and free. It took me a bit to get things completely stable on this old Dell PC I have here but so far it is working well. I was even able to use a new installation tool called Wubi that allowed me to install it as if it were a program in Windows XP and I can switch back and forth at boot time. If things continue to show potential, I might think about putting the kids on here for a few days to see how it works out.
